Below is a list of various features available in the public S2 layouts. Select the name of the feature for a list of layouts which support it. The following eight features are available in all layouts:

The layouts listed below allow you to change the style of borders around one or several elements of your journal page (e.g. content area, entry area, etc.). If your layout is not on this list, it is still possible to change the color and style of borders through the use of Custom CSS.

Layouts with this option allow you to customize the text for the "Read Comments" and "Post a Comment" links on your Recent and Friends pages. These options can be found on the Text page of the Customize Journal Style area, and are supported by these layouts:

The layouts listed below provide an option in the Customize Journal Style page for you to change the way dates are displayed. Some layouts provide a list of choices to select from, while others enable you to build your own date string from the system variables. A list of these variables can be found in this tutorial. For example, the date format string %%month%% %%dayord%%, %%yyyy%% will display the date as "October 15th, 2004", while the date format string %%yyyy%%.%%mm%%.%%dd%% will display the date as "2004.10.15". Here is a list of layouts in which you can change the time display format.

This option allows you to change the style and behavior of the underline on links through an option in the Customize Journal Style page. The layouts listed below include this option; If your layout is not on this list, it is still possible to adjust the link underlining through the use of Custom CSS.

This option allows you to specify your own text for the "navigation" links on journal pages, which link to different journal views. The default settings for these fields are "Recent Entries", "Friends", "Archive" and "User Info", which link to the Recent, Friends, Calendar, and profile pages, respectively. This option can be found on the Text page of the Customize Journal Style area and is available on the layouts listed below:

This option allows you to set the alignment of your journal's content area through an option in the Customize Journal Style page, either as a choice of left, center, or right, or by adjusting left and right margins. The layouts listed below include this option; If your layout is not on this list, it may still be possible to adjust the alignment of your journal through the use of Custom CSS.

This option allows you to set the width of the content area of your journal through an option in the Customize Journal Style page, either as a percentage of overall width or in absolute units. The layouts listed below support this option; some layouts allow you to set the width of journal entries separately. If your layout is not on this list, it may still be possible to adjust the width of your journal through the use of Custom CSS.

Layouts with this feature enable the user to customize the colors of various elements of the layout by entering a hexadecimal color code directly into an input box on the Customize Journal Style page. If your journal layout is not on this list, it may be possible to customize the colors through the use of Custom CSS, which all layouts support.

This option allows you to toggle display of user icons on entries appearing on your Friends page. This option can be found on the Customize Journal Style page and is supported by the following layouts:

This option allows you to set the width of entry boxes through a setting on the Customize Journal Style page, either as a percentage of overall width or in absolute units. The layouts listed below support this option; other layouts allow you to set the width of the entire journal content area. If your layout is not on this list, it may still be possible to adjust the width of your entries through the use of Custom CSS.

The layouts listed below allow you to change the font style used in your journal through an option on the Customize Journal Style page, under "Font". Some layouts only have an option to change the overall font, while others allow different fonts in different areas. If your layout does not include this option, it is still possible to customize the font style through the use of Custom CSS. Some of these layouts below allow you to configure addition font options, such as size.

The layouts listed below allow you to change the font size used in your journal through an option on the Customize Journal Style page, under "Font". Some layouts only have an option to change the overall font size, while others allow different font sizes in different areas. If your layout does not include this option, it is still possible to customize the font size through the use of Custom CSS. These layouts include an option to change the font face as well.

[s2 layouts by feature] Free Text/Extra Sidebar Content

This feature allows you to add custom text content to the sidebar of your journal. HTML is allowed, so you can use this area to add a counter or other widget, provided that widget does not use JavaScript or Flash. Although it has different names in different layouts, the following layouts support this option:
† The introductory blurb in Unearthed appears at the top of selectable journal pages, rather than in a sidebar.
‡ Minimalism, Smooth Sailing and the Expressive/Mixit family include a "Sticky Post" feature in addition to free text boxes in the sidebar. The sticky post is like the Blurb in Unearthed, but is styled to resemble an entry and appears only on Recent pages.

If a layout supports this feature, it displays the foreground and/or background colors you have specified for your friends. Information on specifying colors for your friends can be found in this FAQ. The parentheses contain details regarding how the friends colors display on the friends page.


* Component and Expressive are not available to Basic accounts, while The Boxer is not available to Basic or Plus account holders.
† These layouts include a toggle to enable or disable the chosen friends colors.

The layouts listed below feature links to common entry management options (next, previous, Edit, Add to Memories, Track This, etc.) as a "toolbar" of icons instead of text links. Some of these layouts have a toggle option in the Customize Journal Style page entitled "Toggle to show the next, memory, edit, etc icons on the entry view page". 3 Column has additional options allowing you customize the icons with your own images.

† These layouts do not have an option to disable the toolbar display.

Layouts with this option allow you to customize the text used for the heading of the Links List module in the sidebar. This option can be found on the Text page of the Customize Journal Style area and is available in these layouts:

Layouts with this option allow you to customize the text used for the heading of the Page Summary module in the sidebar. This option can be found on the Text page of the Customize Journal Style area and is available in these layouts:

The layouts listed below include a small calendar in the sidebar (except where noted) of the most recent month, similar to the month displays on the Calendar/Archive pages. The mini-calendar respects entry security settings, i.e. you will see the month corresponding to the most recent entry you have permission to view.

[s2 layouts by feature] Number of Journal Entries on Recent/Friends Page

These options allow you to specify the number of journal entries to display per page on your Recent and Friends page, respectively. To minimize server load, it is not possible to display more than 50 entries on either page. The minimum number of entries that can be displayed is 1 on Recent pages and 5 on Friends pages. These options are available on all layouts:

This option is also known as "Old-Style Comment Pages", and can be found in the "Presentation" section of the Customize Journal Style page. Called "Disable customized comment pages for your journal", this option toggles between pages that match your journal's style ("customized") and pages that match your chosen site scheme, which is the style of comment/entry pages in use for this page. As explained further in this FAQ, this option has no effect for Basic and Early Adopter account holders. Comment pages will by default match the journal style of Plus, Paid, and Permanent account holders. This feature is available in all layouts:

This option allows you to specify an image URL to be used as a background for your journal pages. The image must be uploaded to a webspace provider that allows remote loading to LiveJournal. The following layouts support this option:

Some of the layouts that support background images also allow you to control additional properties of the background, including: scrolling or fixed images, position, and tiling. The following layouts support these options:

The layouts listed below feature a module in the sidebar that indexes the contents of the page being displayed. The exact format varies by layout, with most listing the titles of posts on Recent and Friends pages and providing links, and some layouts also provide titles of comments on customized Entry pages. The Page Summary module on Recent and Friends pages is limited to the maximum number of posts that can be displayed on these pages.

This setting allows you to specify the position of the links to other journal views (Recent/Friends/Archive/Profile), with choices of left, center, or right. The option can be found on the Customize Journal Style page and is available in the layouts listed below. If your layout is not on this list, it may still be possible to customize the alignment of view links through the use of Custom CSS.

This setting allows you to specify the position of the journal title, with choices of left, center, or right. The option can be found on the Customize Journal Style page and is available in the layouts listed below. This setting allows you to specify the position of the "# Comments" and "Leave a Comment" links on entries, with choices of left, center, or right. The option can be found on the Customize Journal Style page and is available in the layouts listed below. If your layout is not on this list, it may still be possible to customize the alignment of comment links through the use of Custom CSS.

This option enables you to customize the description text used for entry "metadata", the Current Mood/Music/Location/Groups fields that appear on entries if data has been entered. This option can be found on the Text page of the Customize Journal Style area, and are supported by these layouts:

This option is available on all layouts. When viewing your Friends Page, enabling this option will display a community's default user icon (if it exists) instead of the poster's icon selected for that post. This option has no effect on personal journals or on community pages.

The layouts in the list below allow you to customize the items displayed in the sidebar through options on the Customize Journal Style page. Except for Disjointed and Refried Paper, these layouts also allow you to change the order of modules in the sidebar.

This option allows you to set the width of the journal sidebar through an input on the Sidebar page of the Customize Journal Style area. Depending on the layout, you can set the width either as a percentage of the overall width or in pixels. This option is available in the layouts listed below. If your journal layout is not on this list, it may be possible to change the sidebar width through the use of Custom CSS, which all layouts support.

The layouts listed below allow you to change the text displayed on entries when no subject is entered for that entry. You can find this option on the Text page of the Customize Journal Style page.

[s2 layouts by feature] Bottom Margin

This feature allows you to specify a margin size on the bottom of the content area. You can use this feature to shift your journal contents up order to display a footer image at the bottom of your journal. This feature is only available in one layout; however, it is still possible to change the bottom margin through the use of Custom CSS.

All of the layouts listed below display the user icon associated with each entry on your journal's Recent page (i.e. http://exampleusername.livejournal.com/). Of the layouts listed, all except for A Novel Conundrum, Disjointed, and Generator include an option on the Customize Journal Style page to toggle display of user icons on and off (not all layouts enable icons by default).
